If you have always wanted to make a documentary film yet have no idea how to start, then this class is for you. You do not need a fancy camera or editing suite. You can use your smartphone and free online apps which we will access in the centre with our computers. The emphasis is on simplicity, storytelling techniques and satisfaction.
You will learn how to create a documentary film from beginning to end and will move through the four stages of documentary production: pre-production, production, post-production, and promotion. The result will be a short film no longer than 15 minutes, created in any genre and style you like - experimental, character-driven, observational, or poetic. The choice is yours. Throughout the course, there will also be discussions on the role of documentary films, recommendations for viewings and encouragement to keep a documentary journal of your film journey.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Jeannette Pope
Jeanne is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, writer and traveller. She has lived and worked in China teaching film production, studied for her BFA in Montreal, Canada and travels frequently to her village in France where she works on village stories, oral history and digital work. She is involved with the Victorian Cemetery in Tunbridge Wells as a videographer and helps at the Rusthall Community Cinema. She is very passionate about do-it-yourself, and handcrafting and encourages this in her classes which include scrapbooking, and digital stories. Everyone of us has a story to tell, to share, to inspire and to learn from; this is the joy of storytelling.
