Who is this course for?
For those who have completed a Beginners course, who have studied the language approx for 60 hours in the past, or who can ‘get by' when abroad, eg. greetings, asking for and giving personal information (including hobbies), asking the way, ordering food and drink, travel and tourism. Students should have a good grasp of basic grammar such as nouns, gender, numbers, adjectives, common verbs in the present, questions and negatives.
Students may be able to join the course after it has started if they have appropriate knowledge. The Programme Manager will be able to advise.
Our approach
The emphasis is on communication and all four skills (Speaking/Listening/Reading/ Writing) will be covered, although this course focuses on assessment of Listening and Writing skills. A variety of teaching strategies will be used, cassettes/CDs and videos/DVDs may be used. The foreign language will be used most of the time.
Initial assessment is carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point is recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets are set to aid development of the skill. These are revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress.
Level and Qualification
Level 1 of the National Qualification Framework. Students will work towards two units of the NOCN Level One Certificate in the Language - one in Listening and one in Writing. Upon successful completion of the Writing and Listening assessments students will receive 6 qualification credits, which constitute one Award. These 6 credits will count towards the 12 credits necessary to obtain the full qualification.
Things you need and any additional Costs
The course book will be discussed at the first session. We advise students not to purchase books or expensive materials until after the first class unless otherwise advised. Students should bring a pen and paper and an A4 ring binder for handouts.
Progression
The appropriate follow-on course would be a Spanish 3 course. The tutor will advise.
