This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners.

This course will help to develop your skills and confidence in drawing using pencil, pen and charcoal. The course will cover fundamental principles in drawing and you will be introduced to the work of a variety of artists. By the end of this course you should be able to:- draw more accurately from observation- develop a fluid sketching technique- create a sense of depth and perspective in your drawings- interpret texture and surface quality- draw using a range of materials with some confidence- start to develop a personal approach to drawing landscapes.There is no set ‘homework’, but you are welcome to practise and do further work at home.There is no qualification for this course.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Clare Langlands

Clare is a painter and printmaker and has been a practising artist for more than twenty years. She studied BA FIne Art at Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic and was awarded a postgraduate scholarship to study at The School of Fine Arts, Athens. Clare has exhibited her work both locally and in London. Her pictures combine figurative motifs with abstract mark making, bold colours and pattern to create decorative, playful images. She works in oil paints, printmaking and collage and sometimes combines the processes to create intricate, layered surfaces on canvas. Clare is an experienced teacher with a PGCE in Art and Design from Goldsmiths University.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.You can access the class from your computer equipped with a camera and a microphone, from a laptop (where the camera and microphone should be built-in), a tablet or a smartphone.

Before each lesson, the tutor may send you by email essential lesson information/handouts for you to consult in advance, and before the class starts, the tutor will have sent you by email an invitation to join, which will be a simple weblink to click. The system is free, secure and easy to use. Should you have questions about the required equipment, please do not hesitate to contact us by telephone or by email. What do I need to have with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the needs of the course. Please do not buy anything especially for the course before it starts, but if you have any appropriate materials/equipment, please bring them along to the first session.
