An Introduction to Expressive Drawing - Summer Workshop

Please note: due to the current Covid 19 health emergency, this course will be delivered by online/real time methods.

This course will enable you to take an experimental approach to making a drawing based on the tutors own practice. You will explore line, texture and mark making skills involved in the creation of drawings..This course will introduce you to the practical steps by encouraging individual responses to thematically based work. Through a variety of projects during the course we will also discuss how we look at things and why. This is a good introduction painting and drawing course for beginners and improvers alike.

By the end of the course you should:-

• Have made drawings exploring a range of materials and methods based on the tutor’s professional practice.
• Developed confidence in drawing and experiment with different basic drawing tools
• Explore different approaches to making drawings for future practice.
• Gain confidence in sharing ideas with other like-minded people in the class.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Cas Holmes

Cas Holmes is a professional fine artist with over thirty years experience. She trained in the UK at UCA Maidstone and also in Japan, India and Canada. She teaches internationally and is the author of The Found Object in Textile Art, Connected Cloth and soon to be published Stitch Stories.

How will I be taught?

The tutor will aim to use a variety of methods including email, social media private groups (e.g. Facebook, Whatsapp, etc.), assignment setting and personal critique/assessment feedback. There may also be recorded and live video contact where appropriate and possible. You will be contacted and receive instructions before the course begins.

Practical projects, Demonstration of techniques and exploration of different drawing media in a project based workshop demonstration. Completion of torn paper drawings. Group feedback and discussion.

What do I need to bring with me?

It is recommended to have minimum of 2 x A2 size sheets of paper - can be heavyweight cartridge or watercolour paper.
Please bring any basic drawing materials, (pencils,coloured pencils, pens, charcoal etc) with you if you have them. There will be some additional charcoal and pencils for use on the day.

What do I need to join the course

This course is for students interested in a simple introduction to gaining confidence in experimental techniques in drawing.

You can access the class from your computer equipped with a camera and a microphone, from a laptop (where the camera and microphone should be built-in), a tablet or a smartphone. Before each lesson, the tutor may send you by email essential lesson information/handouts for you to consult in advance, and before the class starts, the tutor will have sent you by email an invitation to join, which will be a simple weblink to click.
