Art History - An Exploration of LGBTQ+ Artists - Online Live

A course that incorporates lectures supported with images video clips exploring the life, art , techniques and legacy of LGBTQ+ artists. After the hours lecture, students will take part in a drawing/ painting/ collage workshop inspired by the work of each artist. Each lesson will introduce you to an LGBTQ+ artist . You will get opportunity to discover and find about each artist; the cultural and historical background, their lives and inspirations. You’ll then get the opportunity to produce art work as a response to the lecture.

• Discover and familiarize yourself with the following artists . Zanele Muholi , Michael Clark , Gerda Wegener , Claude Cahun , Leigh Bowery and Hannah Hoch .
• Experience drawing using pens , paints from online images and video clips .
• Create collages and mixed media work using magazines / found resources.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Angela Wooi

Angela Wooi is an artist and illustrator. She graduated from Wimbledon School of Art and UCA with a BA Hons in Fine Art.
An award winning artist, she works in mixed media, using drawing painting and collage and also designs costumes . Her background in theatre design and creative direction gives her a unique edge within her creativity. She is a founder member of the arts cooperative Making Art Work based in Maidstone. Her teaching style is structured but fun, challenging and exciting .

How will I be taught?

You can access the class from your computer equipped with a camera and a microphone, from a laptop (where the camera and microphone should be built-in), a tablet or a smartphone. Before each lesson, the tutor may send you by email essential lesson information/handouts for you to consult in advance, and before the class starts, the tutor will have sent you by email an invitation to join, which will be a simple weblink to click. The system is free, secure and easy to use. Should you have questions about the required equipment, please do not hesitate to contact us by telephone or by email. What do I need to have with me?

Each week will include an hour exploring the work of the artist and then two hours will be spent creating art work inspired by each artist.

What do I need to bring with me?

For this course you will need
• A3 pad of mixed media paper or cartridge paper sketchbook
• Black pen / pencils to draw
• Set of watercolour of similar paints / brushes
• Willow charcoal sticks /putty rubber
• Old magazines / books to cut up
• Scissors
• Pritt stick style glue

This course will be delivered online. Students will join the class from home and be able to exchange and in interact with other learners as they would in the classroom (speaking, listening, writing in the chat box). Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques.

What can I do next?

You will be able to do the follow on course which explores different artists or join the Thursday Morning Iconic women artists course. There are also many practical courses that may be suitable.
