Chinese Cantonese Beginners - Modular Course - A - Online Live

This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners

Even though Chinese Cantonese is not the official language, it is widely sopken in China and Hong Kong. If you are interested to speak Chinese Cantonese at the basic level, this Beginners Modular course will help you to star to speak Cantonese. .
You can start with either Module A if you are a complete beginner or Module B providing you have the appropriate knowledge (about 20 hours of study) . Module C reinforces the language covered in the other modules and therefore is not for complete beginners. You can join Module C if you have some basic previous knowledge (around 40h of study).
This is an opportunity to practise speaking Chinese Cantonese and develop your language and vocabulary face to face with your tutor and other students.

Module A:
By the end of the course, you should be able to
- Give and receive personal information
- Use numbers (to talk about prices)
- Order and pay for food and drink in a restaurant/café
- Use basic expressions to facilitate communication
- Recognise/use some Chinese characters
Basic grammar will be studied. You will learn to use expressions and forms appropriate to the language.

You may be given homework (1 hr max) each week to reinforce classroom learning.

How will I be taught?

The focus will be on oral communication (speaking and listening) and some reading and writing of Chinese characters will also be included. Pronunciation, Intonation and Chinese culture are an integral part of the course. The course will be conducted mainly in the foreign language adapted to your level. Learners will work through different activities individually, in pairs and in small groups, using a variety of learning methods and resources (role-play and games etc). Homework set will provide and opportunity for self study

Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student' starting point will be recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets will be set. This will be revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress. Tutors will mark homework and give written or verbal feedback.

What do I need to have with me?

The course book will be discussed at the first session if appropriate. Students will need to bring a pen and paper and an A4 ring binder for handouts, although we advise students not to buy anything until after the first session.

What can I do next?

After completing module A you should continue with Modules B and C.
The appropriate follow-on course after completion of at least two modules is a Beginners Plus course. The tutor will be able to advise or check

What do I need to join the course

This course is for students with no previous knowledge or those with a little basic knowledge or vocabulary who want to consolidate at a Beginners pace. If you are unsure please speak to us or to a Curriculum Leader.
