This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners.
This is course module B, Do you want to be able to speak Chinese Mandarin at the basic level when visiting China? This online based Beginners Modular course is for you because we know that it is difficult to learn a language on your own. , Exchanging with your tutor and other students will give you the opportunity to practice speaking in Mandarin with other learners and develop your language skills further, We want to give you a flexibility of choice so you can join at the start of each module or complete the three modules A, B and C . Each module will have an introductory session, Module B, - Introductory session to review greetings and numbers, - Discover a few new Chinese characters, - Ask for use direction and travelling information, - Shop for items around the place you visit/live, , Module C, - Introductory session to review greetings, numbers and 10 essential vocabulary on items relating to food and shopping., - Discover a few Chinese characters, - Extend vocabulary for the topics above, - Improve accuracy and intonation/pronunciation, - Oral practise of the topics in Modules A-B, , At the end of the 3 modules, successful students will be able to: , • Introduce yourself , • Order food and drink, • Describe places and give simple directions , • Use key phrases for shopping, • Recognise and write 10 Characters , Grammar will be studied. You will learn to use expressions and forms appropriate to get by. You will be given small amounts of homework (1 hour max) each week to reinforce classroom learning.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Mu-Wen Wang

Janet is a native Chinese speaker who has been teaching Chinese in Adult Education, schools and communities since 2007. She is an experienced and qualified (DTTLS-PGCE) tutor.
Our Language tutors are either native speakers or have native-speaker fluency in the language they teach. They have specialist qualifications and experience in teaching a foreign language to adults and all have experience of living in the country of the language they teach.

How will I be taught?

The focus will be on oral communication (speaking and listening) and some reading and writing of Chinese characters will also be included. Pronunciation, Intonation and Chinese culture are an integral part of the course. The course will be conducted mainly in the foreign appropriate language to your level. Learners will work through different activities individually, in pairs and in small groups, using a variety of learning methods and resources (role-play and games etc). Homework set will provide and opportunity for self study, Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point will be recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets will be set. This will be revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress. Tutors will mark homework and give written or verbal feedback.

What do I need to have with me?

The course book will be discussed at the first session if appropriate. Students will need to bring a pen and paper and an A4 ring binder for handouts, although we advise students not to buy anything until after the first session.

What do I need to join the course

This course is for students with either no previous knowledge or those who have completed Module A or have a little basic knowledge or vocabulary who want to consolidate at a Beginners pace. , It is possible to join Module B without having completed Module A as topics studied are different. The introductory session will enable new students to catch up on Greetings and Numbers as these will be necessary for Module B., If you are unsure please speak to us or to a Curriculum Leader.
