Introduction to Writing for Wellbeing
This short course is designed to explore ways that writing can support personal growth & wellbeing. It is suitable for complete beginners & experienced writers seeking a relaxed & nurturing approach to the creative process.
Words are powerful. At a writing for wellbeing class, the emphasis is on the process & pleasure of writing, rather than the product. You will be guided to respond to multi-sensory prompts, objects, words and poetry which will be provided for you. Although you will be invited to share some of your writing, there is no pressure to produce polished, complete pieces of work. There is growing evidence that expressive & reflective writing can benefit health and wellbeing, but attendees are asked to be mindful about what they share during feedback. The right to privacy & to skip any exercises that tap into painful memories will be respected.
The course is led by a creative writing & wellbeing tutor who has experience of facilitating workshops and classes in the community.

Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Susan Emm
The course is led by an experienced and qualified KAE tutor & local writer, who has experience of running classes, groups and workshops at adult education centres, libraries and in the wider Thanet community. Sue Emm is also a member of Lapidus International, the words for wellbeing association and has recently joined the NHS Recovery & Wellbeing College at Adult Education Centre, Margate. Sue holds a Mental Health First Aid Certificate and brings a nurturing approach to the creative process.
How will I be taught?
Our tutors strive to create a relaxed and informal atmosphere where students can work at an appropriate pace. Teaching methods are varied, incorporate many styles including some one-to-one tuition and are adapted to enable students to achieve their full potential. If you have a disability and think it may affect your learning in the classroom, or using any of our other services, please speak to us in confidence as soon as possible. We will discuss options with you and do our best to provide the support you would like.
Your tutor will assess your progress against the outcomes of he course and your own personal outcomes and will offer advice and guidance on how you are doing. On this non-accredited course you will be asked to complete a short individual learning plan. Your tutor will also record your progress by capturing comments from, and discussions in class, during/after each activity and taking photos of written material with your consent. (e.g. the group poem)

Pen, paper and folder.
What can I do next?
Transferrable writing skills for KAE Creative Writing for All Courses, KAE Skills Functional Skills qualifications and other writing for wellbeing courses, or other creative writing courses. The tutor will be able to advise.
What do I need to join the course
No previous qualifications or experience are required. You will need to have a reasonable familiarity with written and spoken English.
The course is designed to accommodate beginner students of creative writing with little or no previous experience; however, more experienced students are welcome.It is suitable for complete beginners & experienced writers seeking a relaxed & nurturing approach to the creative process.
