Do you write regularly but need some guidance and feedback on your writing? If you are an experienced writer that wants to edit and revise your work to a higher level, then this course is for you.

Each week will provide you with the opportunity to write and then share your writing with your peers: writing poetry, screen plays, creative- fiction and short stories. You will also write a synopsis and covering letter to add to your growing portfolio.

On a typical week, the lesson will begin with an exploration of how to write a poem – anything from a Villanelle to a tidy Tanka (fingers for counting at the ready). Your tutor will also provide you with a weekly prose writing prompt which you will complete as homework and then share the following lesson. You will be given tutor and peer verbal feedback to enable you to improve and evaluate your writing. (40 minutes poetry/15 minute break/50 minutes sharing and feedback/15 minutes prompt reveal and discussion).

Writing is subjective, and you will become part of a writing community that will act as a ready made audience for your craft. Students will also be encouraged to share any writing that they have been working on independently – for example: extracts of their own novel. You will also be expected to edit and revise your writing based on feedback.

Students will be given the opportunity on week 8 to hand in a piece of work of their choice (word count TBC) to the tutor and gain written feedback.

‘By the end of this course, you will have

• written 15 different types of poetry forms and shared with the group
• Self evaluated and edited work to a high standard.
• Developed a large portfolio of writing.
• Gained confidence in our writing through sharing with an audience.

How will I be taught?

You will learn through tutor input, doing writing exercises, taking part in discussion and sharing your work with others in the group.
We provide a stimulating and safe environment in which students will explore their own talent with a supportive attitude to each other's work. Pair and group work will be used during the course. Students should be prepared to share and discuss their original work, receiving comments and constructive feedback.

Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point will be recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets will be set. This will be revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress. The tutor will take in some work for comment and give written or verbal feedback. Work for home study will be set each week.

What do I need to bring with me?

Pen and dedicated writing notebook.

What can I do next?

Your tutor will be willing to discuss options with you.
If you are interested in other subjects, please ask at Reception or visit

What do I need to join the course

This is for those who already done beginners courses and is not suitable for novices. Students will need a reasonable standard of written and spoken English and it is likely they will be keen readers.
