Creative Writing - Writing your Life - Online Live

Day of week:
Delivered online
Mixed Level
13:30 - 16:00
9 weeks

This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners.

Are you interested in writing about real life, including moments related to family, work, friends, maybe even wider social history? You may be hoping to write your memoir, a biography or get together a collection of travel writing? Whatever your aspirations, this Creative Writing - Writing your Life course caters for all and will enable you to move beyond simply noting events.

Autobiography and the recording of real occurrences can be synonymous with rather lacklustre writing but that doesn’t have to be the case. We encourage creative flair - meaning the so-called little or seemingly mundane moments are engaging - for writer and reader alike.

Every term is self-contained but explores different themes, ideas and techniques. This enables all attendees to gain fresh input and challenges; we do attract regular and occasional returners as well as newcomers. You will have the opportunity to try out different approaches and genres, gaining regular practical feedback on your writing.

You will be able to -
- Write about real life and experiences in an interesting and engaging way
- Try out a range of styles, forms and genres in a supportive environment
- Identify potential themes and ways to organise and structure your writings
- Develop and strengthen your individual style and voice.

How will I be taught?

Through writing exercises you will practise writing skills and cover topics appropriate to life writing. You will learn techniques for writing by reading autobiographical examples, and through discussion and practice. A safe and supportive learning environment will enable you to give and receive feedback about your writing. You will discover how to create a ‘memory record’, where to start and how to order your work and also how to stay inspired.
Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student' s starting point will be recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets will be set. This will be revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress. Tutors will mark homework and give written or verbal feedback.
