This is year 2 of the 2 year course. It combines tutor tuition, peer group learning, practical group work development, including community groups and presentations, continued counselling skills enhancement, counselling theory education along with continuation of your trainee-counselling placement.
This course will be taught in the Canterbury centre, but should the Government impose restrictions we would revert to online.
In this second year and once the exam is completed, we will turn our attention to different ways of integrating other theories appropriately. In one sense every counsellor works to their own theory. Our own personalities, personal histories, values and beliefs impact how we respond in the counselling room, as well as our knowledge of counselling research. In this course, we make this explicit, allowing each student to develop their own unique integrative approach which fits their personality and philosophy. In developing this integration, we touch on a variety of other theories including CBT, mindfulness, person-centred, TA, psychosynthesis and compassion focused therapy, inner child work to name a few.
A sound knowledge and understanding of ethical boundaries and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) ethical framework..
You will continue to develop a profound understanding and experience of counselling supervision through working as a trainee counsellor in the community within a counselling placement.
A continued deeper exploration of developing your own self-awareness is an important part of the course. For example

• What do you need to develop within yourself that will enable you to develop the capacity to therapeutically engage with clients?
• What barriers do you hold that serve to reduce your ability to hold and contain a client's emotional pain?
• Explore and challenge your own issues, fears and prejudices in order to work with client diversity.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Hilary McNair
Hilary’s passion for counselling has led her to qualify in this subject at honours degree level. Her ten plus years of counselling experience has included building up a private practice where she sees individuals and couples for a wide variety of issues and has previously worked with women affected by domestic abuse. She is an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and is also qualified to counsel children and young people. Hilary holds a diploma in Counselling Supervision, which she draws upon to supervise other practising counsellors.
Her approach is integrative and relational. She has a special interest in gestalt theory, working with PTSD and in working with spirituality in the counselling room. She holds an honours degree in Education. She passionately enjoys creatively planning and delivering courses and has done this for a variety of organisations. She endeavours to make the
delivery as experiential and exciting as possible. Her love of coming alongside people in their personal development is a highly motivating factor in both her counselling and her teaching. She sees relationship as being at the heart of both aspects of her work.
How will I be taught?
This course will be taught in the Canterbury centre. Large groups, activities, role plays and triad work, followed by observer feedback. Students will also be involved in presentations to the class.
You must attend a minimum of 90% of the course in order to achieve the qualification.
With regard to the work placement, students need to complete at least 100 hours within a counselling agency over the full 2-year course to be fully qualified. Students will be given a "Fitness to Practice" assessment at the end of Year 1 and once passed can start to secure their agency work placement. Kent Adult Education require all counselling agencies to provide trainees with a service framework that includes both a line manager and clinical supervision. CPCAB recommends that your agency provides appropriate clinical supervision to meet BACP supervision guidelines for trainees – currently a minimum of 1.5 hours individual supervision per month (or the equivalent if in group supervision) or 1 hour of supervision for every 8 hours of client work. In addition, you will require 30-50 hours group training supervision as part of the course. Please be aware that Kent Adult Education will not be able to pay for your supervision. Students are also responsible for finding their own placement. Progression to Year 2 is not possible without passing Year 1 and having a work placement arranged.
What do I need to bring with me?
A4 Ring binder, notebook and pen. You will have access to our Moodle Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) which will provide in-depth course information so access to a computer with Word and a camera is essential.
What can I do next?
Following successful completion of this course, you will be qualified to work as a Counsellor in an Agency or set up your own practice. You may continue your studies by progressing onto CPCAB's:
- Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (PC-L5) or
- Level 5 Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills and Theory (CBT-L5) or
- A Foundation Degree in Counselling.
And, following at least one year (part time) of post clinical experience, the CPCAB's:
- Level 6 Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision (TCSU-L6).
What do I need to join the course
You will already hold Counselling Skills CPCAB Level 2 and Counselling Studies Certificate Level 3 and completed year 1 of this qualification.
If you are a current Level 4 student with Kent Adult Education your tutor will need to approve your application for year 2 and will provide you with a letter as proof of approval.
If you are an external candidate, ie. not progressing from our Year 1 course, you need to complete the online application form at the following link - https://forms.office.com/r/CbuL8BdzyZ
If you are an external applicant you will be expected to present your 1st year level 4 portfolio and we will seek a reference from your tutor as to your suitability for year 2. The interview will involve a discussion with the tutors about the content and level of the course to ensure it is suitable for you and you will be asked to take part in a skills practice exercise.
It is recommended that you don't enrol if you have undergone a life-changing experience during the last 12 months. Your emotional stability will be discussed at interview and it is a chance for you to ask questions about the heavy commitment involved in this course.
Please note, that fees are payable for each academic year of this two-year course so the fees shown are for the second year only.. There is no automatic right to join a Year 2 course after Year 1 as this is based on performance in Year 1 and emotional stability and wellbeing. There is no opportunity to apply for the Advanced Learner Loan for this course. Students can spread the cost of the course with our Easy Payment Plan. A text book is provided.
