French Beginners - Steps to Conversation - Online Live - GRA

This is an online course taught live on Zoom.

Do you want to be able to speak French at a basic level for fun, improve your vocabulary and be able to pass some key messages?
This short Beginners course has been structured to give you the tools to learn through repetition and exercises which will improve your conversation skills and memory.
This is an ideal course if you have been studying on your own or with apps and you would like now a live support and the possibility to practise with other students.

This online class will re-create a real face to face class environment from the comfort of your own house.

By the end of the course, you should be able to
- Introduce yourself and others (friends/family)
- Practise situations in bars and Restaurants
- Use numbers (to talk about prices)
- Ask questions in markets/shops

Please note that there is no session on 18 October, the last class is on 25 October.

How will I be taught?

The focus will be on speaking and listening. Some reading and writing will also be included. Pronunciation and French culture are an integral part of the course. The course will be conducted mainly in the foreign language. Learners will work through different activities individually, in pairs and in small groups, using a variety of learning methods and resources (role-play and games etc). Homework set will provide an opportunity for self-study.
Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student' starting point will be recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set targets. This will be revisited regularly during the course to monitor and record your progress. Tutors will give written or verbal feedback.

What do I need to have with me?

The course book will be discussed at the first session if appropriate. Students will need to have a pen and paper and an A4 ring binder for handouts, although we advise students not to buy anything until after the first session. You need to be abe to access to Zoom for the kessons and have an email to receive the invitations to the course.

What can I do next?

The appropriate follow-on course will be either a Beginners or Beginners Plus depending on your starting point. The tutor or the Curriculum Leader will be able to advise. For all our course please visit

What do I need to join the course

This course is for students with no previous knowledge or those with a little basic knowledge or vocabulary who want to consolidate at a Beginners pace. If you are unsure please carry out our self-assessment test available on The assessment provides a score to help you chose the best course for you.
