This Furniture Restoration course will include an introductory experience of French polishing, veneering, matching antique surfaces, elements of design style, wood recognition, dealing with holes and gaps, reproducing missing moulding and carvings, casting plaster and resin, using tools and structural repairs. You will work primarily on your own projects at your own speed with individual guidance but with the emphasis on starting from scratch.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will be encouraged to look at the work of other crafts people, both contemporary and historical and keep a sketchbook/notebook to record goals/ideas, processes and progress and self assessment against the learning aims on your Individual Learning Plan, ILP.
Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising crafts people.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will need to bring your own choice of project to the first class. At this first session the tutor will discuss any special tools and materials needed and the workshop is well equipped with tools for you use at the class .There are some materials such as French polish, wire wool etc available to buy on the course as needed at reasonable costs. Please do not bring in any large items of furniture until you have spoken with the tutor as storage is limited to one item per person.

What do I need to join the course

This course will be suitable for students who are complete beginners or anyone wishing to continue a project.
It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person please ask to speak to the Curriculum Leader.
