This is a 5 month intensive online course leading to a GCSE English Language qualification, with the examining body AQA. This course will be delivered on a virtual learning platform (Zoom) from January 2022. The sessions will take place in real time on Tuesdays, 09.30 - 14.30 with breaks.
The syllabus covers the following and should encourage learners to:
To read fluently, and with good understanding, a wide range of texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. This will include literature and literary non-fiction as well as writing such as reviews and journalism
To read critically and make comparison between texts
To summarise and synthesise information or ideas from texts
To use knowledge gained from wide reading to inform and improve own writing
To write effectively and coherently using Standard English appropriately
To use grammar correctly and punctuate and spell accurately
To acquire and apply a wide vocabulary, alongside a knowledge and understanding of grammatical terminology
To listen to and understand spoken language and use spoken Standard English effectively
The course is assessed by two 1 hour 45 min written examinations taking place in May/early June 2022. Further information regarding the course specification can be obtained from AQA's website at www.aqa.org.uk.

Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Amanda Godden
Amanda is a qualified English tutor with a BA in English Literature and a PGCE. Amanda has taught English, including GCSE and A -Level, in further education and secondary school. She is passionate about English and loves to see students grow in confidence and fulfil their potential.
How will I be taught?
Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and ensure that you achieve your full potential. The course will be taught in a friendly but focused atmosphere, where your individual needs are catered for.
Teaching and learning are carried out through formally taught sessions, discussion, group work, and supported with online resources, worksheets and books, practice papers, home study, feedback and evaluation.
What do I need to have with me?
Notebook, pens, pencils and a folder. You may also be required to purchase some texts. Your tutor will advise at the first session.
What can I do next?
This course can enable you to progress to A Level English or higher level study with Kent Adult Education or other learning providers. Specialist advice is available from your tutor to help you identify the best course for you.

What do I need to join the course
A pre-course initial assessment is held before enrolment to confirm that the course level is suitable for you and flexible support is available online and through our KAE Skills centres.
You will need a laptop or PC and connection to join the classes. We ask learners to have their camera on during their sessions so that they can participate fully in the group activities. You will need sufficient time to prepare for sessions and to do set homework and self study each week.
All our higher level GCSE courses will work towards gaining the best grades possible. At the first session of the course, the tutor will set out the commitment necessary to achieve those higher grades and a minimum grade 4 or 5 (equivalent to a C grade on the old GCSE exam).
For the Summer 2022 GCSE series, exams will be the following centres subject to Covid guidance:
Ashford, Broadstairs, Canterbury, Dartford, Folkestone, Gravesend, Maidstone, Sittingbourne,Tonbridge. Please note Dover is no longer available due to building works
