This is a one year intensive online course leading to the new GCSE Mathematics qualification at Foundation level with the examining body AQA. This course will be delivered on a virtual learning platform (Zoom) from September 2022
The course follows the Linear syllabus, which comprises three broad topics:
Number and Algebra – working with Numbers and the Number System; Fractions, Decimals and Percentages; Ratio and Proportion; Algebra; Expressions and Equations; Sequences, Functions and Graphs.
Geometry and Measures – Properties of Angles and Shapes; Geometrical Reasoning and Calculation; Measures and Construction; Mensuration; Vectors.
Statistics and Probability – the Handling Data Cycle; Data Collection; Data Presentation and Analysis; Data Interpretation; Probability.
The examinations will take place in May/early June 2023 and will comprise 3 written papers. Further information regarding the course specification can be obtained from AQA's website at www.aqa.org.uk. Mock exams will be held in centres in December. Your tutor will confirm the dates with you.
**PLEASE NOTE: this course will require regular attendance, a high level of commitment and at least 3 hours of home study per week, as set by the tutor.**
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Paul Smith
Paul Smith is a qualified maths and ESOL tutor with an honors degree in lifelong learning. He has worked in adult education for ten years and delivers to groups ranging from entry levels to GCSE. He brings a wealth of knowledge gained from current and previous experiences and guides and nurtures students to learn and not be taught.
How will I be taught?
Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and ensure that you achieve your full potential. The course will be taught in a friendly but focussed atmosphere, where your individual needs are catered for.
Teaching, learning and assessment are carried out through formally taught sessions, discussion, group work, and supported with online resources, worksheets and books, practice papers, home study, feedback and evaluation.
What do I need to have with me?
Notebook, pens, pencils, folder, scientific calculator and geometry set comprising a ruler, set square, protractor and pair of compasses. You may also be required to purchase a text book. Your tutor will advise at the first session.
What can I do next?
This course can enable you to progress to A Level maths or higher level study with Kent Adult Education or other learning providers. Specialist advice is available from your tutor to help you to identify the best course for you.

What do I need to join the course
A pre-course assessment of skills is held before enrolment to confirm that the course is suitable for you and flexible support is available online and through our Skills centres.
You will need a laptop or PC and connection to join the classes. We ask learners to have their camera on during their sessions so that they can participate fully in the group activities. You will need sufficient time to prepare for sessions and to do set homework and self study each week.
All learners enrolled on this GCSE course will be expected to attend from the first lesson which will give an introduction to the course and the content of the new GCSE exam. The tutor will also set out the commitment necessary to achieve a grade 4 or 5 which is equivalent to a C grade on the old GCSE exam.
For the Summer 2023 GCSE series, exams will be the following centres subject to Covid guidance:
Ashford, Broadstairs, Canterbury, Dartford, Folkestone, Gravesend, Maidstone, Sittingbourne,Tonbridge Wells.
