In this course we will look not only at the origins of Catholicism in Ireland but also the enormous influence the Catholic church has had in all aspects of society, from politics, education, public morality and opinion to the shock revelations of the sex abuse scandals of thousands of children while in pastoral care of priests. We will go on to look at the future of the church in Ireland and the changes needed for it to survive in a modern Ireland.
For several centuries under British rule, the Irish Catholic majority were suppressed, but eventually the Church and the British Empire came to an understanding. Following the Easter Rising of 1916 and the creation of the Irish Free State, the Church gained significant social and political influence. Ireland continues to deal with the consequences of that.
