Dutch masters, the pre-Raphaelites, Impressionism - think you know about European art? Then think again. From the pre-historic art work found in Ireland from the stone age, bronze age and iron age through to the 19th century revival in the Irish visual arts, we will look at Celtic designs through the centuries: from Celtic Crosses, spiral designs and the intricate interlaced patterns of Celtic knotwork to the works of the talented artists who emerged in the field of portrait and landscape work in the late 17th century. We will explore the early modern period when, by the 19th century, the changing political landscape cultural resurgence and nationalist ideals contributed to a revived interest in the Irish language and Celtic history
