Floral symbolism has been a feature of the cultural heritage of every civilisation; from the Egyptians to the Victorians, flowers have carried potent meaning and associations. Throughout history, plants have been cultivated as much for their symbolic associations as for their practical or decorative functions. This course will introduce you to the ‘language of flowers’, examining its application through history, with particular reference to Egyptian, Classical, Persian, Tudor and Victorian examples.
By the end of the session, you should be able to:
Identify the symbolic meaning of one or more plants or flowers.
Describe one or more of the cultural uses of the language of flowers through history.
Discuss the reasons for the use of the secret or exclusive symbolic code associated with plants and flowers across different cultures through history.
