Sevenoaks Adult Education
Nineteenth century was a pivotal time in Irish history. In this course we will examine the period from the Act of Union in 1801 to independence in 1922.
In this course we will examine the contribution of Daniel O’Connell in creating the first mass nationalist movement and how his success depended on his ability to be all things to all men, and his contribution to linking nationalism with Catholicism
We look at the origins of a unionist tradition, how it can be traced back to the first decades of the nineteenth century. The dismantling of the religiously exclusive institutions of the kingdom of Ireland, along with the rise from the 1820s of Catholic mass politics, meant that self-government became a luxury which most Irish Protestants were convinced they could not afford.
