Illustrators and graphic designers use visual methods to share information, send messages and communicate ideas in answer to a brief, this is what I do when not teaching.
Aimed at beginners (with or without an art background), you’ll learn how to interpret a brief and use brainstorming, research and fun exercises to stretch your mental muscles to generate ideas in response.
You’ll learn about the elements and principles of art and design, and the basics of typography, putting them into practice on a different project each term. (Projects vary between greetings cards, posters, book covers and logos.) Ideas generation is at the heart of this course, so don’t feel you have to be able to draw like Leonardo Da Vinci to join in - there’s room for all styles. You can also try out different techniques (such as collage, photograms and simple printmaking) to help express your thoughts.
Along the way, be inspired by the work of influential designers and illustrators, and develop a deeper understanding of this exciting, useful area of the visual arts.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.

What do I need to have with me?

Please have access to an A3 sketchbook and any pencils to the first session. Further materials for the course will be discussed at this point. If you have any materials you feel are suitable have them at home and speak to the tutor when the course starts.
