Screen or Silk Screen Printing originated in China around the 12th century, as a means of transferring designs onto fabric.
The process arrived in Europe in the late 18th century and was popularised by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and other pop artists in the 1960s.
The technique is widely used today with artists and designers not just for garment making but for printing on many surfaces.
This course introduces you to the printing process of screen printing and its endless possibilities.
Over the 5 week course you’ll get the opportunity to:
Draw / sketch and collage in a sketchbook to explore a theme
Make a coherent design that suitable to print
Develop personal compositions and interpretations, using other artists as inspiration.
Demonstrate ability to mix colour / learn about colour theory
Cut out stencils to make up to a 4-colour screen print
Successfully print on to paper and fabric your finished design
Work to relevant health and safety guidelines
Equipment to print - screens , squeegees , craft knives boards and some initial start up materials are provided on this course . you will need to purchase some materials on the course your tutor will talk you through what you will need on the first day .
Please bring with you on the first session
• Drawing pencil / rubber / scissors / glue ( print stick or similar)
• A set of felt tip coloured pens
• Some old magazines to cut up
• An A4 or A3 size sketchbook
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Carol Gay
Carol is a practising designer and textile artist.
She studied Textile Design at Winchester College of Art gaining a BA honours Degree.
Throughout her years designing for the fashion and furnishing textile industry she has worked with clientele such as M&S, Monsoon and Oasis. She has exhibited at Premier Vision (Paris) and Texworld (USA)
In 1994 she completed her Post Graduate Certificate of Education enabling her to combine her love for designing with teaching. She has many years teaching both Art & Design and Textile Design.
Carol has exhibited periodically in group shows throughout the South East and is currently working on her next body of work which demonstrates her love for colour, texture, pattern and the environment she is surrounded by and its endless possibilities to inspire.
How will I be taught?
Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques.
You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists recording ideas in sketchbook/notebook.
Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time.
You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
One to one guidance, group critiques, self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes stated on the ILP
