This course will give you a vision on how Italy and the Italian have been perceived by different authors. It will be an occasion to also discuss your views.
Please find below information about the topics:
The Grand Tour and journeys through Italy in the 18th century: discussion of works by Tobias Smollett, John Moore.
Influence of Italy on the Romantic poets: discussion of works by Shelley, Byron and Keats.
Representation of Italy in the fiction between the wars: discussion of works by E.M.Foster and D.H. Lawrence.
Italy and Italians in contemporary fiction: discussion of works by McEwan, Tim Parks.
How will I be taught?
• Short presentation/talk on historical periods and authors
• Reading of passages from selected works (in English) and listening/vision of videos (in Italian) followed by comprehension activities -oral and written
• Main focus on oral discussions and conversations in Italian based on comparisons between works, references to further works, expressing opinions.
What do I need to bring with me?
There is no course book. handouts will be provided. Students will need to bring a pen and paper and an A4 ring binder.

What do I need to join the course
This is a course for everyone, even if you speak or understand very little Italian. Certainly if you have an interest in Literature, Italian, Italy and English writers this is the course for you.
