The course comprises 6 classes each structured around 3 texts which will offer students different levels of challenge. There will be a short historical anecdote or poem, a piece of narrative verse – the story of Boudicca’s revolt in 1st century Britain - and the story of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the earthquakes which preceded it as told by Pliny and Seneca. Texts are provided with relevant vocabularies, background notes and grammatical notes to guide students not only to the literal meaning but also to the beauty of the texts, their multi-layered imagery and contemporary and mythological allusions.
