Why is Latin still relevant today? Have you ever wondered what theses Latin mottos means?
This short course will look at how Latin influenced our language and will be centred on these four learning outcomes:1 – History of the language: short historical background, alphabet, roman numbers and pronunciation. Why is it still important today? Familiarise with some simple words we can see on buildings (archaeological Latin)2 – The importance of Latin in science, words we still use in medicine, biology and chemistry. What is the etymology, what do these Latin words mean today and how can we use them in our everyday life. 3 – Mottos and public speaking. How to enhance eloquence and impress with Latin phrases. Analysis of the most used phrases and how to put them in context. 4 – Latin in literature and philosophy. Discover modern literature influenced by Latin, translation of small sentences.

How will I be taught?

A variety of teaching strategies will be used. Learner participation will be through individual, pair and group work. Internet resources may be used. Initial assessment is carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point is recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets are set to aid development of the skill. These are revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress.

What do I need to have with me?

We advise students not to purchase other books or expensive materials until after the first class unless otherwise advised. Students should bring a pen and paper and an A4 ring binder for handouts.

What can I do next?

There is no qualification but this course can provide students with the basics needed for further study or to go on to study for a qualification.

What do I need to join the course

For students who have no knowledge or very little knowledge of the Latin language. It is also beneficial for students who have studied in the past and need to refresh their knowledge.
