Explore and Write in Stream of Consciousness
This course is a creative exploration of the stream of consciousness writing technique developed during the Modernist literary movement of the twentieth century. Each week, we will explore works by formative writers—including Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce and Dorothy Richardson—to understand how this technique assisted in developing prominent themes of the Modernist era. We will also look closely at the impact of stream of consciousness writing within more contemporary fiction, and students will have a regular opportunity to practice writing and sharing their own stream of consciousness narratives. There is no need to purchase texts, but a recommended reading list will be offered; and all literary excerpts to be covered in class will be provided as the course proceeds.
