This is an Online course delivered live on 4 Sunday evenings.
Fight the end of the weekend blues, grab your cup and join us for these relaxed sessions. There will be 4 sections, each taking as its theme some aspect of literature found in both classical and more modern works. Students choose which 4 themes will be studied. The choice of themes is Love Where You Live (Sense of time and place); The Good Life and the Golden Mean; The Wine-Dark Sea (Imagery); Rhetorical Flourishes; In Medias Res (How to Tell Action Stories); Carpe Diem (Making the Best of Life); Wine, Women, Men and Song; Heroes and Vilains Students will gain insight into literary precedents, techniques and a sprinkling of classical philosophy.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Richard Marsden
Richard has taught for Kent Adult Education for a number of years. He has an MA (Cantab) and a BA (Hons) in Modern and Medieval Languages. His mother is French and he has family connections in France and he also knows Latin. He is a keen amateur local historian with a particular interest in the traditional buildings of Kent.
How will I be taught?
A mixture of material supplied by tutor for study and discussion and general discussion, including favourite examples which students are encouraged to provide.
What do I need to have with me?
students' favourite examples from literature; tutor handouts and texts will be provided.
What can I do next?
To other courses on Roman and Classical Latin themes, Philosophy or other Sunday courses on other subjects.
What do I need to join the course
Anyone with an interest in European literature, literary forms and techniques and the Greek and Roman classics. The course is pitched at the general reader and the curious, and is intended to be light-hearted.
