This course will take place at Sittingbourne Kent Adult Education Centre
This course is suitable for those who wish to create original handmade jewellery using a variety of techniques and materials. Beginners and those with some experience are welcome. New students will be introduced to the craft of handmade jewellery making using a variety of mixed media techniques and materials. Materials may include glass beads, wire, plastic, and various metals and foils. This course uses hand tools and basic forming techniques and will also include soldering. The tutor will demonstrate basic techniques related to the materials, as appropriate, e.g. wire manipulation to create simple shapes, polymer clay techniques. Returning students will develop their skills and learn further techniques.
Learn how to design and make an individual and professionally finished silver pendant. Group and
individual tuition will be given in techniques such as piercing, filing, shaping and forming,
soldering, texturing and polishing.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
Select and use the correct tools and equipment for 2 specific processes.
Demonstrate at least 2 of the following jewellery making skills, piercing, filing, shaping, forming,
soldering or polishing
Explain the relevant Health and Safety guidelines for the tools/equipment you have used.

How will I be taught?
Craft courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills, techniques and
understand how to design for a chosen craft. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods
including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and
critiques.Students will be encouraged to look at the work of other craftspeople and artists, both
contemporary and historical and keep a sketchbook/ notebook to record ideas, processes and
progress. Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are
practising craftspeople.
What do I need to bring with me?
It is advisable to wear old clothing or bring an apron or lab coat, long hair must be tied back and
open toe shoes must not be worn. Materials for this course will be provided but please bring
along anything you already have that you think would be useful.

What do I need to join the course
This course is suitable for those who wish to create original handmade jewellery using a variety of techniques and materials. Everyone is welcome to join this course. No prior knowledge or experience is required although it would be beneficial. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak to the Programme Manager before you enrol.
