This course takes place outside -
For walks of any length in unfamiliar places, the use of a map is advisable if not essential. Apart from giving navigational information they provides endless hours of fascination.
The course is designed to provide theoretical and field practice using 1:25,000 scale mapping and a compass to navigate in the countryside. It will give confidence to those who have just started to learn to navigate or those whose skills have lapsed over time. At the end of the course you will be able to:
*Interpret features shown on a map and relate them to those visible in the landscape you are navigating
*Follow or utilise linear features to aid navigation: paths, tracks and other linear features (roads, water courses and fences).
*Set your map in the field by relating to the features around you and by using a compass
*Create and follow compass bearings
*Demonstrate more confidence in your ability to relate distance travelled on the ground to that shown on the map - using the Roman scale on your compass and pacing
The course is delivered by our partner Stuart Howard
