Massage - Introduction - Centre Based

This Introduction to massage course will be delivered face-to-face from Canerbury Adult Education Centre. In it you will learn the techniques required to complete a basic full body massage using aromatherapy oils.

The course will cover the health and safety aspects of massage, including contra-indications to massage, and you will also learn a massage routine covering the main parts of the body. The course will involve some undressing of the upper body, as well as practising the massage routines on others in the class. Students will also be made aware of the benefits of massage for reducing stress and tension.

By the end of the course students will be able to:

- Be able to perform a basic full body massage routine,
- Be able to name a number of contra-indications associated with massage,
- Be able to name a number of benefits associated with massage
- Understand the health and safety aspects of delivering massage

There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

How will I be taught?

Some undressing is involved which is handled sensitively protecting students' modesty.

You will work in pairs to give and receive full body massage treatments

Teaching methods will include demonstration, lecture input, discussion and time to practice what is being taught and for question and answer sessions. Our Complementary therapy courses are not intended as treatments in themselves.

Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods and create a relaxed and informal atmosphere, where there will be opportunities to practise practical skills and ask questions throughout.

You will have feedback throughout the day.

What do I need to bring with me?

• Towels - 1 large towel or a sarong for modesty; 1 large towel to cover the massage couch for your comfort.
• Small cushion to support your head if desired
• Hair band or clip to keep hair off shoulders during massage for long hair
• Wet wipes may also be useful but hand washing facilities will be available
• Short nails would be preferable
• Notebook and pen

What can I do next?

To further massage courses with Kent Adult Education or other providers. Possible progression to the ITEC Diploma in Holistic Massage. Enrol early as places cannot be guaranteed.

What do I need to join the course

No previous knowledge or experience is required. This massage introductory course is suitable for any adult who is interested in learning how to massage themselves, family or friends to promote a feeling of wellbeing.

This course is not be suitable for pregnant women.
