This is a course which will help boost maths skills and enable learners to learn the language of maths in English. Learners can progress onto a Functional Skills (FS) qualification if appropriate.
at any time of the year, although classes start in September. Course levels start from Entry Level 1 and
progress to Level 2.

Functional Skills Plus maths classes cover the skills for everyday tasks, or those required at work.
These skills include measuring distances, calculating areas for home decoration and improvement,
calculating cooking times for recipes, understanding payslips and work rotas. The course is assessed
by one written examination.
Further information regarding the course specification can be in obtained from your tutor once you have
been placed into a class.
Please note: this course will require an initial assessment, regular attendance, a high level of
commitment and at least two hours of home study per week as set by the tutor.

Mike Paley is a skilled and experienced maths tutor who has worked in Adult Education for many years. With a wealth of experience in delivering to groups of all levels, he provides in-depth learning and self-study for all learners, providing information and guidance on such topics as initial assessment, examinations and extra support.

How will I be taught?

The course will be taught in a friendly but focused atmosphere, where your individual needs are
catered for. Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles
and ensure that you achieve your full potential. Teaching and learning are carried out through formally
taught sessions, discussion, group work, and supported with role play, task sheets and resource books,
practice papers, home study, feedback and evaluation.

What do I need to bring with me?

Notebook, pens, pencils and a folder as you will be required to keep a folder of your work.

This course can enable you to progress to higher levels of Functional Skills* (if appropriate) and
GCSE* (if appropriate) or other study with Kent Adult Education. Specialist advice is available from

What do I need to join the course

Before enrolling on an Maths for ESOL Learners course you will need to complete an initial assessment. Please book an online interview at skillsashford@kent.gov.uk

Please note that you should beE2 ESOL or above and be able to follow spoken and written instructions, read handouts/exercises and take part in group
discussions.
