Oil Painting Beginners: pt1
This course will provide an opportunity to learn, apply the basic skills and techniques of oil painting. The course takes a methodical approach to teaching the elements of oil painting through short simple projects that explore a particular aspect of technique step by step. Teaching by visual demonstration, discussion, written lesson aims, questioning, individual assessment and comment, virtual galleries of artworks in progress and completed, art historical reference.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
• Demonstrate and understand colour theory and mixing
• Demonstrate successful use of relevant tools, equipment and resources
• Use blending with oils to represent form
• Successfully review and evaluate your own work
• Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines
There is no set ‘homework’, but you are welcome to practise and do further work at home.
There is no qualification for this course.
There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Liam Thompson
Liam Thompson studied at Chelsea School of Art and the City and Guilds of London Art School. A frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition over three decades, he won the Royal Watercolour Society Young Watercolourist award and the travel award. He has exhibited in Belfast, Dublin, Glasgow, Edinburgh and the London Societies. Paintings are in the National Trust South East region and Northern Ireland region collections, and the Ulster Television collection. Prints and paintings are in private collections in many countries around the world. Liam is a figurative artist who paints mainly in oils and watercolour. He has taught adults for over twenty years.
How will I be taught?
The tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record your goals, ideas, processes and progress.
What do I need to have with me?
If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. You will need to provide your own materials. Please do not buy anything especially for the course before it starts, but bring along to the first session anything you have already that you think will be useful.

What do I need to join the course
This course is suitable for Beginners It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.
You can access the class from your computer equipped with a camera and a microphone, from a laptop (where the camera and microphone should be built-in), a tablet or a smartphone. Before each lesson, the tutor may send you by email essential lesson information/handouts for you to consult in advance, and before the class starts, the tutor will have sent you by email an invitation to join, which will be a simple weblink to click.
