This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners.

This course aims to teach you to move beyond the automatic settings on your SLR or Mirrorless camera and learn to compose and take good photographs using manual settings. The course is open to complete beginners and is structured to form a firm basis for understanding the skills and techniques associated with designing and taking good, interesting and exciting photographs in a variety of contexts, and developing the knowledge to critique your own work effectively. There will be individual and group tuition and discussion including demonstrations in class and some location work.

This course will teach you how to use the manual and semi-automatic modes on your camera; recognising how and when to adjust apertures and shutter speeds; you will learn techniques in focusing successfully; recognise when to use different focal lengths; control ISO successfully; and introduce using flash to improve exposures.

You will also learn how to present an image ready for printing or social media. You will be set practical tasks as homework to discuss in the weekly lessons. Basic image adjustment skills are covered on this course including demonstrations using Photoshop Elements, all skills taught will be transferable to whichever digital image application you prefer.

At the end of the course you will be able to:

1. Distinguish camera mode settings for particular photographic situations.
2. Create a range of images for specific situations.
3. Adjust images for various print sizes and for publishing in different formats.
4. Identify equipment needed to optimise images for different situations.
