This pottery course in Deal is aimed at introducing and improving the skills, techniques and ideas used to make pottery and ceramics., Students will be encouraged through practice, group discussion, one to one and experimentation to follow their own path with clay. , At the end of the course students should be able to:, , - make their own designs in clay, - use different techniques (pinching, coiling, slab building, press moulding and throwing) , - decorate the forms using different surface techniques and experimentation, - glaze their work, - gain a more thorough understanding of firing techniques, - work according to Health and Safety

How will I be taught?

Craft courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft to a higher level. Students will also be expected to research and respond to the design aspects of craft. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques., Students will be encouraged to look at the work of other craftspeople and artists, both contemporary and historical and keep a sketchbook/notebook to record goals/ ideas, processes and progress. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity. Students will need to participate fully to get the most out of the course. , , To ensure that students' learning needs are met, the tutor will work with the student to complete the required Individual Learning Plan. , As a starting point, all Creative subjects will have the following course outcomes, - successfully demonstrate techniques/skills., - use appropriate media, materials and processes., - use work of others to inspire own work., - demonstrate an understanding of relevant Health and Safety issues., These outcomes will be the basis of all learning. Additional personal learning outcomes can be negotiated with your tutor to better meet your individual needs.,

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring an apron or overall to the lessons as clay tends to be a messy subject. If you have any pottery tools bring them to the first session but do not buy any equipment until you have spoken with the tutor. A notebook, pen and pencil will be useful for taking notes related to your object making. Clay, glazes and firing are costed by weight and the size of the item you create.
For Health and Safety please wear closed toe footware.
