This pottery course in Deal will give students the opportunity to develop skills to form clay into fired objects. , Each student will be taught methods and techniques to suit their own level and pace. , The pottery studio is well equipped to do hand building work, throwing on a wheel and has kilns which fire at both stoneware and earthenware temperatures. Students have the choice to make functional or sculptural pieces so long as it is feasible within the course time and the constraints of the pottery studio., , By the end of this course you should be able to;, - Identify a variety of different types of clay., - Identify and demonstrate the clay preparation process., - Create a range of forms using hand building techniques that include; pinching, slabbing, coiling, pressmoulding., - Experience and develop your skills in throwing on the potters wheel., - Identify and apply at least two glazing decoration techniques,
How will I be taught?
Studio craft courses provide an opportunity for students with some experience to further learn and practise the skills of a specific craft at a higher level. Students will also be encouraged to develop a dialogue with the contemporary and historical context of the craft, and will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook/notebook to record ideas, processes and progress. Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors, most of whom are practising craftspeople. They will use variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, instruction, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques., To ensure that students' learning needs are met, the tutor will work with the student to complete the required Individual Learning Plan. , As a starting point, all Creative subjects will have the following Course Outcomes, - Successfully demonstrate techniques/skills., - Use appropriate media, materials and processes., - Use work of others to inspire own work., - Demonstrate an understanding of relevant Health and Safety issues., These outcomes will be the basis of all learning. Additional Personal Learning Outcomes can be negotiated with your tutor to better meet your individual needs.,
What do I need to bring with me?
Please bring an overall, shirt or apron and a sketch book or notebook. Your tutor will discuss any other basic pottery tools you may need and where you can purchase these as the course progresses.Clay, glazes and firing are costed by weight and the size of the item you create.
