This course covers different hand building techniques such as pinching, coiling and slabbing. Depending on your progress you may also cover basic throwing and turning skills. Experienced students will be encouraged to make and experiment using a combination of these techniques. As you advance you will also be taught different decoration techniques to apply colour using slip, glaze and oxides.
By the end of this course you should be able to:
Demonstrate a hand building skill (coiling, pinching, soft and hard slab building or press moulding) to an appropriate level,
Identify the correct clay for the piece you are making
Explain the health and safety guidelines for the tools and materials you have used.
How will I be taught?
Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and/or craftspeople. You will undertake critical evaluation, develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills., The tutor will provide feedback on your work through one to one guidance and group critiques., At the start of the course you will work with your tutor to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set out what you want to achieve by the end of the course. You will both monitor and assess your progress throughout the course to ensure your learning needs are being met. There are no formal exams or tests to complete on this course.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please wear old clothes and shoes. Clay is paid for by weight at a reasonable rate in class, items must be paid for before they are fired.
For safety only clays and glaze supplied by the centre can be used in class.
Health and safety issues will be discussed and you will be instructed in the application of safe working practices. Basic equipment will be provided but you may want to build up your own selection of pottery tools as you progress.

What do I need to join the course
There are no enrolment requirements for this course. Both beginners and those with some experience in pottery are welcome on this course. It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak to the programme manager before you enrol.
