This course will cover several different hand building techniques including pinching, slabing, press moulding and coiling. You will have the opportunity to learn to throw on the potter’s wheel. Glaze and slip application will be covered. You may experiment with coloured slips, underglaze colour, and oxide decoration.

Complete beginners will follow a set project to ensure essential basic skills are studied.

More experienced students will work on their own individual hand building projects or develop their throwing skills to a higher level. They can also join the set projects if they wish to.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
Demonstrate at least 2 hand building skills
Demonstrate correct use of a metal kidney to join coils of clay
Explain how to centre clay on the wheel to make a pot.
Explain the health and safety considerations when using Clay.

How will I be taught?

Your tutor will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one instruction, and group discussion. You will be encouraged to look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and craftspeople.

You are encoursegd to look at ways of improving and developing your work. Challenges will be identified, discussed and used as a learning tool.

At the start of the course you will work with your tutor to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) this will set out what you want to achieve by the end of the course. Both you and your tutor will monitor and assess your progress throughout the course to ensure your learning needs are met.
There are no formal exams or tests to complete on this course.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please wear old clothes and shoes. Clay is paid for by weight at a reasonable rate in class.
Only clay purchased from the centre may be used in class to ensure saftey in the kilns.
Health and safety issues will be discussed and you will be instructed in the application of safe working practices. Basic equipment will be provided but you may want to build up your own selection of pottery tools as you progress.

What do I need to join the course

This is a mixed level course, both beginners and those with some experience in pottery are welcome. It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak to the curriculum leader before you enrol.
