Stained Glass for All

Design and create a stained glass panel or decorative item using traditional lead methods and/or copper foil. Students on this Stained Glass course in Tonbridge will learn the techniques of traditional leadwork to produce a finished stained glass item. Areas covered will include designing, cutting glass, assembling the project and cementing and soldering. By the end of the course students should be able to:

Use skills and techniques relevant to all the making processes.
Design, make (using personal ideas) and evaluate Stained Glass pieces
Understand the decorative and finishing aspects of Stained Glass
Work with Stained Glass confidently and creatively.
Further develop personal ideas/outcomes with the tutor
Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques.Students will be encouraged to look at the work of other craftspeople and artists, both contemporary and historical and keep a sketchbook/ notebook to record goals/ ideas, processes and progress. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity.
Apart from you keeping a workbook, the tutor will discuss your progress with you and will help you to record this in an Individual Learning Plan. You may be given the opportunity to display your work in our Gallery or at external exhibitions and events.

What do I need to bring with me?

Essential for first session: Novices - 1 sheet 3mm glass about A3 size.Experienced - design ideas and drawing equipment and/or ongoing project and tools.Novices - please do not buy any specialist equipment before the start of the course.
The requirements of each student and the amount and type of glass differs widely so you will be asked by the tutor to pay for any materials you use on an individual basis.
Health and Safety:
* You must wear closed toe shoes
* All masks, gloves and ear defenders will be supplied if necessary
* No drinks are allowed in the studio because of the possible risks of contamination.
