On successful completion of this level 3 Teaching Assistant course, you will gain a national qualification for adults working in schools where you directly support the teaching and learning of pupils. This level 3 course will enable you to gain essential knowledge, understanding and skills to reflect good practice in a Teaching Assistant role. The level 3 Teaching Assistant course will consist of the following eleven mandatory units: , Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults; Schools as organisations; Understand child and young person development; Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people; Support learning activities; , Promote children and young people’s positive behaviour; Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults; , Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people; Support assessment for learning; Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings; Support children and young people’s health and safety. , , By the end of the course students should be able to:, Provide and evaluate support in the classroom, working under the guidance of the class teacher., Identify and evaluate legislation and a range of school policies and explain how they are put into practice., Identify, describe and evaluate a range of different types of schools and school staffing structures., Evaluate their own professional development, with support, setting goals and targets for improvement., Explain holistic child development and identify factors that may impact on development., , Expect to spend 5-8 hours a week working on assignments in addition to the course hours delivered via Zoom to begin with and then in the classroom when safe to do so and those hours in the school where they work. Successful students will gain a City and Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning.

Alison Jones has wide experience as a Nursery, Family Centre and Special Needs Worker - she has specialised as a tutor in Childcare and Teaching Assistant courses. She has higher assessor qualifications and is a school governor as well as having been a successful Brownie Guider in the local community. She is an enthusiastic communicator of the values needed to gain successful employment in this sector.
How will I be taught?
This course will include tutor input plus small group work, tutorials and practical workshops. You will receive guidance in producing a portfolio of evidence that will be submitted for assessment. , , E-portfolios will be used on this course. An e-portfolio is an easy to use electronic format for students to record their work, achievement and goals. All work can be attached or uploaded very simply to the e-portfolio including handwritten work and other documents., , It gives students the opportunity to use and learn ICT skills as well as making work instantly available for assessment. We will be providing training on how to use the e-portfolio which will include how to upload a document. , , Tutors will give feedback on homework assignments as well as classroom activities; there will also be tutorials. The assessment of this course includes observations of your working practice within the school following which feedback will be given.,

What do I need to have with me?
Access to a computer / laptop / iPad with internet connection to attend classes via Zoom and be able to upload work into the E - portfolio. Accreditation costs are included in the course fee as well as a student portal for the online portfolio.

What do I need to join the course
It is essential that you are working in a paid or voluntary position in a primary, secondary or special educational setting for the duration of the course for a minimum of one day a week with access to children. The placement needs to be organised by the student before a place can be offered on the course. Students need to have an enhanced DBS (previously CRB) check. Students should initially contact their placement school to discuss local DBS arrangements. Please note that this may incur an additional cost that is not included in the advertised course fee., , This is a Level 3 qualification equating to ‘A’ level standard and so assignments and, therefore, coursework will require this level of competence. You should be able to follow spoken and written instructions, read handouts/exercises and take part in group discussions., , A pre-course assessment of literacy and numeracy skills is held before enrolment to confirm that the course is suitable for you. This can be arranged by telephoning your local Adult Education Centre., , This Teaching Assistant course is suitable for anyone who is interested in gaining a level 3 qualification to give them skills to support teaching and learning in schools. Most students will have gained the level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Certificate before joining the course. However, if you have suitable qualifications relating to this qualification and work experience within a school, it may be possible for you to join the course without this.
