This course aims to expand a learner's knowledge of the Ukulele and its repertoire. This course will be delivered online.

This course aims to improve and stretch basic skills to play the Ukulele. Students will learn new pieces for Ukulele while simultaneously widening their knowledge of the key composers for the instrument.

By the end of this course you should be able to:

• Play and memorise Bar Chord shapes.
• Sight read intermediate pieces of music.
• Play new songs using written sheet music format.
• Play syncopated chord patterns.
• Perform a repertoire of pieces/songs from memory.
• Develop right hand technique.

To benefit fully from this course, students are advised to practice the exercises and pieces in their own time.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: James Rowdon

James Rowdon was born in Dorset and studied both jazz and classical styles of guitar. He obtained a degree in contemporary music from Canterbury Christ Church University and takes great pride in seeing his students succeed on the guitar. James performs frequently throughout South East Kent in jazz and afrobeat ensembles, as well as performing solo classical guitar at local events.

How will I be taught?

Students will be taught both as a group and one to one, with opportunities to perform and practice. The tutor will give detailed instructions and demonstrations.

To benefit fully from this course, students are advised to practice the chords, scales, exercises and pieces in their own time.

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will keep a notebook and update an individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.

The course will be taught using the online platform Microsoft Teams. Within Microsoft Teams we will meet weekly for a seminar to discuss and explain the topics or concepts for the week. There will also be accompanying documents available each week to read and practice with. There will also be scope for learners to message the tutor outside of lessons to ask questions, and also the facility to upload your own audio or written files for feedback.

What do I need to have with me?

Learners will need their own Ukulele and tuner. The tuner can be either shop-bought or downloaded onto their phone/tablet. A music stand is advised to promote good posture. Optional extras include a strap for the ukulele, a footstool and a Capo.

What can I do next?

Students can progress to higher grade levels if required. Enrol early as places cannot be guaranteed.

What do I need to join the course

You will need your own ukulele.
The course is aimed at students who have completed the beginners Ukulele course or have experience of playing at a basic level..


You can access the class from your computer equipped with a camera and a microphone, from a laptop (where the camera and microphone should be built-in), a tablet or a smartphone. Before each lesson, the tutor may send you by email essential lesson information/handouts for you to consult in advance, and before the class starts, the tutor will have sent you by email an invitation to join, which will be a simple weblink to click.
