Watercolour and Drawing - Beginners and Improvers

This course will be held at St Faiths Adult Education Centre, Maidstone.

This course is for those who are interested in starting to paint and draw. You will be introduced to a variety of materials, learn how to use them, and start to develop the building blocks for successful drawing and painting. Observational drawing skills, experimental drawing, both fun and technical exercises and group work are used throughout the course . The course will cover basic drawing lessons in tone, shade and form using pencil, charcoal, pen and pastel. Also covered will be experimental and fun exercises, designed to stimulate creativity and creative expression. You will learn about colour theory and how to mix paint, and use different types of painting techniques to best effect. A variety of approaches and waterbased media may be explored.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

- Draw more accurately from observation;
- Mix colours using basic colour theory;
- Plan a composition;
- Identify the work of relevant artists' work covered in the course.

Who is the tutor?

About the Tutor: Caroline Clough

Caroline Clough has a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art. She has exhibited and sold paintings in galleries in London and the South East and has taught painting and drawing with Kent Adult Education since 1986. She currently works mainly with watercolour, mixed media and acrylic and enjoys experimenting and working with a range of subject matter.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. Students are encouraged to look at other artists' work and on occasion do some homework and research. They will be encouraged to keep a sketchbook of work.

Your tutor will give you individual feedback and help you to assess your own work throughout the course.

What do I need to bring with me?

You will be given a full list on the first day of the course. On the first day you will need an A4 sketchbook of cartridge paper and a set of artist’s pencils that includes some hard pencils ( H) and some soft (B). If you are unsure just have an ordinary HB with you on the first session.

What do I need to join the course

Everyone is welcome to join this course. No experience of knowledge of the subject needed. Have a chat with one of our Creative team who will be able to make sure this is the right course for you.

The course is most suitable for students with no or a very little experience of drawing and painting.
