This is an online course delivered using Zoom, in real time with live interaction with your tutor and fellow learners.

This course is designed to teach new students the basic techniques of using watercolour to develop confidence and skills. More experienced learners will build on these and develop their own unique style.
Students will explore different techniques and media in order to create exciting visual images in a fun and supportive learning environment. All students will be challenged to work at an appropriate level.

By the end of this course students should be able to -
-explain the colour wheel and how to mix colour
-demonstrate how to create effective washes, glazes and watercolour effects
-demonstrate how to create a dramatic and engaging composition
-explain the rule of thirds
-identify a variety of interesting techniques which can be used.

About the Tutor: Victoria Wainwright

Victoria Wainwright is a professional Artist and Illustrator specialising in pen and ink and printmaking but with a varied background in illustration techniques and briefs. She regularly undertakes commission work where illustration is a feature, and has illustrated a number of published books. Victoria's main interest is in drawing people, capturing their movement and character.

How will I be taught?

This course will be delivered online. Students will join the class from home and be able to exchange and in interact with other learners as they would in the classroom (speaking, listening, writing in the chat box). This measure is dictated by circumstances

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstrations, one to one guidance, group discussions and critiques. You will look at the work of contemporary and historical artists and you will keep a sketchbook/notebook and individual learning plan (ILP) to record goals, ideas, processes and progress.Students will need to understand the potential benefit from the programme of study, read and interpret ideas, communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable and manage your own time. You will undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills.
At the start of the course you will work with your tutor to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) to set out what you want to achieve by the end of the course. You will both monitor and assess your progress throughout the course to ensure your learning needs are being met. There are no formal exams or tests to complete on this course.

What do I need to have with me?

Please have this equipment ready for the first lesson and the tutor will then advise you of what else you might require.
A round watercolour paint brush size 12 ( but 10 or 12 will do)
Ultramarine blue
Cadmium yellow
Alizarin red
Watercolour paper, rough, cold pressed 300 grams.

What do I need to join the course

The course is suitable for those new to Watercolour and those who would like to refresh their practice in this medium.
It is important to note that Art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity.
You can access the class from your computer equipped with a camera and a microphone, from a laptop (where the camera and microphone should be built-in), a tablet or a smartphone. Before each lesson, the tutor may send you by email essential lesson information/handouts for you to consult in advance, and before the class starts, the tutor will have sent you by email an invitation to join, which will be a simple weblink to click.
