During this course you will learn about the different tools and their uses within the carpentry and cabinet making trades, as well as the different types of timber that can be used. You will also learn about the various joints their applications, how to mark out and cut them.
At the end of the course you should be able to:
-Take and transfer measurements accurately.
- Safely cut wood using a hand saw.
- Make a finger joint.
- Safely use a chisel.
Who is the tutor?
About the Tutor: Kim Woodward
Kim Woodward is an experienced cabinet maker and has been teaching in the FE/HE sector for the past 12 years, covering a range of subjects which have included Carpentry and Joinery, Antique/Furniture Restoration, Art and Design and BTEC
How will I be taught?
By one to one tuition and in a group and assessment of the projects will be through self assessment with the tutor. You will track your progress on an Individual Learning Plan, ILP,with your starting point identified in discussion with the tutor at the start of the course.
What do I need to bring with me?
If you have any carpentry tools of your own please bring them along, we do have a limited selection for students to use. Please do not buy anything until you have spoken to the tutor at the first session. You will need to provide your own wood but do not buy anything until you have attended the first session. For this project we will start with basic materials (softwood) that cost should not exceed £5.00.
