Meet our tutors - Abigail Walker
Abigail is one of our wonderful Art History teachers, who has studied classics and art history at some of the world’s most prestigious institutions including Cambridge and King’s College London. Abigail is now working on her PhD thesis which explores the landscape in Roman painting and poetry (from the first century BC/AD). Before starting her doctoral studies, she worked in the Commercial Arts sector for several years, initially at Bonhams Auctioneers (eventually becoming a Junior Cataloguer in the Antiquities Department) and then moving on to become Head of Antiquities at Chiswick Auctions. Abigail loved the time she spent in auction houses because it exposed her to so much more art than she could ever imagine, and she found it was a pleasure to work with so many other specialists in their fields. During the course of her PhD, after leading seminars for first-year undergraduates and working on various Public Engagement projects, Abigail finally realised how much she loves teaching. Soon, she became a tutor with Kent Adult Education and now inspires her students to learn more about this fascinating discipline. Abigail says ‘It is such a pleasure not only to pass on the knowledge I have gained throughout my education but also to expand it more and more through all of the students I teach. The wonderful thing about art is that everyone has their own perspective and their own interests to bring to the lesson. That is why I applied to be an Art History tutor at Kent Adult Education. After I finish my PhD, I am planning on pursuing teaching as a full-time career – I am very much hooked!’.
