Chantal has been teaching French for Kent Adult Education since she joined in 2012. She moved from France to Britain in 1972 to work as a French Assistante and starting teaching French in London and Suffolk, before teaching at a secondary school in Kent for 25 years.
She says: “A friend suggested that I would enjoy teaching adults, as a consequence, I have had 10 happy years with Kent Adult Education.”
Her love for the French language and culture has inspired numerous learners in Maidstone over the years. Chantal has taught all levels from Beginners to Advanced Plus, always with the learners interests at heart.
Chantal loves teaching her adult learners within a relaxed atmosphere and she says she tries to make everyone feel welcome in her class, showing her appreciation for everyone’s contribution.
She says: “I like to see the progress that the students make and the confidence that they acquire. I am really pleased for them when they discover that on visits to France they understand more and more and are able to have proper conversations”
Her biggest inspiration is her godfather and his wife who she says took a great interest in her education. She says: “I still have books that they bought for me. I admired and respected them greatly, my godfather's wife received from the hands of Général de Gaulle the Légion d'Honneur for her courage during the war.
My other inspiration is Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel for her life of rags to riches. However, this was not a fairy tale, she succeeded because of her talent, her hard work, she was not afraid to innovate and grabbed opportunities when they presented themselves. Her name, her story, her style, her couture house live on.”
Chantal will be retiring soon, and her learners have expressed they will greatly miss her and her classes.
