About this course

This course will enable you to better understand your pattern instructions and how to follow them using industry methods rather than home dress maker ways, e.g. how to put in a concealed zip with a facing finish at the top. yoke construction using a double fabric yoke, lined sleeveless dresses, 3 ways of making a binding and attaching, set-in welt pockets - all these along with how to choose good fabrics, how to use interfacings and pressing make your clothes look shop-bought.


There is no qualification for this course.

There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

How will I be taught?

Craft courses provide an opportunity for students to learn and develop skills, techniques and understand how to design for a chosen craft. Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance and group tuition. Students will need to participate fully to get the most out of the course. Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.

What do I need to bring with me?

All materials will be provided. Please also bring a packed lunch.

For those who wish to gain understanding of their sewing pattern instructions. and professional ways of carrying them out It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another person, please ask to speak to the Programme Manager before you enrol.

About the Tutor: Barbara Roots

Barbara Roots is a couture clothesmaker whose specialities are weddings and occasion wear. She has been making clothes for herself and customers for 20 years and teaching for more than 15 years. Her clothes are made to the highest standards. Barbara studied at Kent Institute of Art and Design and London College of Fashion.
