About this course

This course in Folkestone will enable students to 'have a go' at creative writing, unlock their creativity, express themselves and explore prose techniques.
By the end of the course students should be able to:
- devise atmosphere and characters for short stories
- write dialogues
- evaluate how much plot is needed in a story
- experiments with different genres
- evaluate their own work and the work of others in a constructive manner
You will develop a writing discipline through class writing exercises and weekly assignments. You will explore both how to write creatively and how to write effectively.
You can choose whether to write from your own life or fiction. You will also explore another aspect of creative writing, such as, poetry or play writing.
You will have the opportunity to review and refine your work to achieve a finished piece with which you are satisfied.
There is an expectation that you will share your writing in class and learn to give and receive constructive feedback.

How will I be taught?

A stimulating and safe environment in which students will explore their own talent with a supportive attitude to each other's work. Pair and group work will be used during the course. Students should be prepared to share and discuss their original work, receiving comments and constructive feedback.
Initial assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the course to assess individual skill level. Each student's starting point will be recorded on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and targets will be set. This will be revisited from time to time during the course to monitor and record progress. Tutors will mark homework and give written or verbal feedback.

What do I need to bring with me?

An A4 file/notepad and folder for handouts. Pen/pencil.

What can I do next?

The tutor will be able to advise.

What do I need to join the course

Students will need a reasonable standard of written and spoken English and are expected to be keen readers.
This course in Folkestone is for people who are interested in creative writing but have little or no experience.
The course is aimed at beginner writers with a passionate desire to write who want to explore their own creativity but need to develop their own voice and styles and discover if they have a talent for fiction.

About the Tutor: Caroline Greville

Caroline has just completed a Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Kent and holds a BA (Hons) in English and American Literature.
Everyone has a story in them.' That's an understatement... everyone has a hoard of potential stories in them! Caroline will help you tap into your overlooked reserves and get writing.
She will explore with the class the idea that many (if not most) successful writers draw on their experience, to some degree, and will pass on some of the techniques that she has learnt.
