About this course

On this mixed ability Yoga Iyengar course in Tunbridge Wellsbeginners will learn basic postures and those with some experience will develop their practice of yoga postures, breathing and relaxation techniques. Your tutor will explain the benefits and how you can apply them to your daily life. You will be recommended to practice regularly at home.

The following learning objectives are what students should achieve during the course:

- Demonstrate and hold a variety of postures using correct alignment
- Practice control of breath to assist relaxation and stamina
- Identify the benefits of Yoga practice
- Link a number of postures to perform a flowing sequence
- Discuss basic Yoga philosophy, history and terminology
You will need to be able to follow verbal instructions, observe and copy physical movements and use spatial awareness within a group. Although there is no specific work set outside of the class, students will gain most benefit if exercises are performed regularly and practised between classes.

How will I be taught?

Teaching methods will include demonstration, explanation, discussion and times for question and answer sessions. Your tutor will demonstrate exercises and routines and will talk you through all movements. Activities will be adapted to suit individual needs and capabilities.

To assist us in providing a safe and healthy environment for you to exercise you will be asked to complete a Confidential Health Questionnaire. You will be carefully observed to ensure that you are working safely and be encouraged to monitor and record your progression on the course on an Individual Learning Plan (ILP).

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring a non-slip mat intended for Yoga, a blanket and socks for relaxation, a bottle of water. Please wear loose comfortable clothing, you will be asked to exercise in bare feet. You may be advised not to take part if you are not dressed appropriately.

What do I need to join the course

No prior knowledge or experience is required. This Yoga Iyengar course in Folkestone is for people of all ages, beginners and those with some experience of Yoga.

Please take a moment to consider the list below. If you have suffered from any of the conditions listed, please check with a medical practitioner whether it is suitable for you to undertake an exercise programme and bring a referral letter from your doctor to your tutor. - Have you had any operations or injuries in the last year?
- Do you often feel faint or have spells of dizziness?
- Are you receiving medication for any condition?
- Do you have high blood pressure?
- Do you have a bone or joint problem, such as Arthritis, Osteoporosis, back or knee problems?
We advise anyone with a pre-existing medical condition to seek advice from their GP before exercising.
Pregnant students should not attend classes until they are at least 16 weeks pregnant.

About the Tutor: Jane Collins

Jane has been practising Yoga for over 15 years and qualified in 2012 as an Iyengar teacher after 3 years intensive training. She taught a beginners’ class in Tunbridge Wells in 2013 and has covered for other teachers. She is a school teacher and also enjoys introducing her students to the benefits of Yoga.
