About this course

Using a range of materials and processes you will be shown how to develop ideas and explore themes with a view to creating individual, expressive results. The emphasis is on learning and experimenting in a relaxed, informal atmosphere and gaining confidence in your ability to respond to subject matter in a way which is unique and personal to you. You will draw inspiration from a varied and interesting selection of primary and secondary resources and encouraged to bring your own areas of interest to the sessions.

By the end of this course you should be able to,
• Create individual pieces of artwork
• Use a range of art materials with increased confidence
• Design, prepare and print from your own printing block
• Generate ideas for further development
• Make informed, intuitive decisions about the progress of your artwork
• Recognise and respond to the techniques of selected artists

There is no set 'homework' but you may wish to experiment with techniques or processes learned in the sessions and do further work in your own time.

There is no qualification for this course.

There is limited parking on site, but there is a public car park nearby and on-street parking.

How will I be taught?

Each class will start with a practical demonstration followed by a question and answer session to ensure good understanding. In addition, you will receive one to one guidance and further demonstration where applicable. There will also be group critiques where students will have the opportunity to learn from each other.
There will be individual and group guidance and feedback, and self assessment against your personal learning aims.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. Throughout the course you will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. If you already have any materials/equipment which you think might be appropriate please bring them along to the first session.

A further course with KAE at beginners or improvers level.

What do I need to join the course

This course is for students who would like to try out a less formal approach to learning about Art. It is suitable for beginners and those with some experience.

About the Tutor: Clare Langlands

Clare is a painter and printmaker and has been a practising artist for more than twenty years. She studied BA FIne Art at Newcastle upon Tyne Polytechnic and was awarded a postgraduate scholarship to study at The School of Fine Arts, Athens. Clare has exhibited her work both locally and in London. Her pictures combine figurative motifs with abstract mark making, bold colours and pattern to create decorative, playful images. She works in oil paints, printmaking and collage and sometimes combines the processes to create intricate, layered surfaces on canvas. Clare is an experienced teacher with a PGCE in Art and Design from Goldsmiths University.
