About this course

On this Soft Furnishing course you can choose from a selection of curtains, blinds, cushions, loose covers, lampshades and bed and table linen depending on your requirements. By the end of the course you will be confident in making a variety of furnishing items and with relevant demonstrations by the tutor. Homework is not compulsory but in most cases is necessary in order that you use your time in the class to the full. By the end of the course you will be able to:
Measure fabric accurately
Cut out accurately,
Machine stitch simple seams
Use a variety of hand stitches as appropriate to your project
Be aware of and work to relevant Health and Safety guidelines

How will I be taught?

Through one to one tuition and demonstrations relating to each new skill or technique with supporting handouts self-assessment against individualised learning outcomes stated on the ILP. You will be encouraged to make samples to support further projects and given individual guidance for your project.

What do I need to bring with me?

A basic sewing kit is essential. This should include sharp pins, needles, threads, sharp dressmaking scissors, small sharp embroidery scissors and non-permanent fabric marker. If you have fabric for your intended project, please bring it to your first class. Apart from pens and notebooks do not buy any other books or equipment before the start of your course. Details will be discussed at the first session or if necessary your tutor will send a list a week before the course starts. Sewing machines are available for use at the centre but you will need to provide your own machine needles.

Everyone is welcome to join this course as no experience or knowledge of the subject is needed.
All levels of experience are welcome. New students may join at any time.
It is important to note that craft courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity. If you need to bring a carer with you, or be accompanied by another adult please speak to the Curriculum Leader.

About the Tutor: Tracy James

Tracy James is a fully qualified costumier and has worked in the West End on Lion King, Starlight Express and Beauty and the Beast, as well as the Royal Opera House for the Royal Ballet. Her work has taken her to Paris and Monte Carlo, working at their opera houses. She also has worked for Fortnum and Masons, Liberty and Selfridges on their specialised christmas windows. She is continually working on youth productions in the local area, as well as abroad in Dubai, whilst also making curtains, wedding dresses and alterations throughout the year.
