About this course

This practical course will introduce you to the art of arranging flowers in a country garden style. It’s a great starting point if you’re a beginner – or are looking to gain some flower arranging confidence, and develop your skills. , , You’ll need to bring your own scissors or secateurs, flowers, greenery and mechanics (that’s flower foam, containers and so on - some of these will be available to buy from the tutor, by prior arrangement). , , By the end of this course you’ll be able to:, , - create a variety of flower arrangements in different styles using fresh flowers and foliage, - confidently apply floristry techniques to an appropriate level, - understand the care and conditioning needs of a variety of plant materials, - show a knowledge and understanding of seasonal plant materials, - demonstrate an awareness of flower arranging basic design , , There is no homework requirement for the course, but you will need to provide your own flowers for class each week., , Students should budget £10-15 per session for flowers. Buying flowers from the supermarket and supplementing these with greenery from your garden is a cost effective way of providing the necessary course materials., , Mechanics will be available to purchase week by week from the tutor – floral foam, dishes, and so on., , , This course will be taught by Julie Davies flower workshops – Julie is an awarding winning florist – BFA Florist Tutor of the year 2016 , ,, , If your course is held at Ashford Gateway in the evening, please note the following:- The main door to the building closes at 5pm Mon-Wed and 6pm on Thurs. The building can only be accessed via the side door which is situated to the left of the main entrance at the corner of the building. There is an entry system via a buzzer.

How will I be taught?

Tutors will use a variety of teaching methods including demonstration, instructions, one-to-one tutorial guidance, group discussions and critiques. Students will be encouraged to look at the work of other craftspeople and artists, both contemporary and historical and keep a sketchbook/ notebook to record goals/ ideas, processes and progress. It is important to note that craft courses are practical, requiring a degree of manual dexterity. Students will need to participate fully to get the most out of the course. Our courses are taught by qualified and experienced tutors most of whom are practising craftspeople.

What do I need to bring with me?

Please bring the following items with you:-

Flowers, greenery and mechanics – to be advised on a week by week basis
Notebook and pen (optional)
Camera (optional)

Week 1

We’ll be creating a table arrangement.


You’ll need a selection of your favourite flowers, chose something dramatic with long stems – roses, carnations or gerberas + small flowers and greenery and straight sticks.


Ceramic pot – or a *plastic flower arranging dish
*Pot tape
*Flower foam
Bindwire or string

*These items will be available to buy in class at £2 per person
